Gleams .....

Took time off from unpacking boxes today to celebrate our son's birthday, with a walk in Petworth Deer Park which we've been doing since he was just a little boy. Happy memories and happy today too.
Though the deer were gathering , the rut was not in full swing, only a bit of throaty calling and bellowing. There was a curious mist, the sun trying to break through gave it a luminous tinge and of all the shots I took, I liked this the most, taken from inside a small copse.

Autumn Mist

At breakfast, autumn mist
lays on the fields
creeps past the window panes,
tinged with the breath of winter.
Shape-shifting trees emerge
as the morning wanes,
sheep dankly dot the hill.
Lunchtime,
a sandwich indoors,
the last of the summer picnics
behind us.
By two
there is a glimmer
in the mist, yellow,
warming
a break-through.
At first just a glow
and then gleams
like *George's teasing memories
to be grasped before they leave.
The dank sheep are dressed
in spangled fleeces,
mist speckles and reflects.
Leaves like beacons of light
amber, red and gold.
Another autumn afternoon
unfolds.

*George Mackay Brown who often referred to 'gleams of memory'
