On a wing and a prayer

Every time we begin a journey like this we say a little prayer, because you never know when it's your time to go and fly higher!!.
Normally we fly Ethiopian Airlines, because they are much cheaper, and when you pay yourself, price is important. Of course there many of our types in first class and donors are paying for it but that's really none of my business, but our organisation is wholly voluntary.
The pic is in the late evening having left Lilongwe at 1.15pm and dropped some chinese miners at Lubashi (Congo) for all the open cast mines, then ist was on to Addis (Ethiopia).
We then flew with Luftansa to Frankfurt and then Dublin.
BUT we had a refueling and pick up in Karthoum (Sudan).
On our right flying in was a huge fire and explosions, which we found later had prevented the pilot from using the preferred runway. We were about to touch down when we roared off again, a huge tail wind had made landing unsafe. Finally we took the short approach and had a perfect landing.
The extra passengers looked like refugees, whole extended families, frightened and clasping their details, but maybe it was the lateness of the hour.
An eventful trip but the air crews were excellent, and we slept a tiny bit
