Behind the scenes

This is a side of the railway rarely seen by passengers. Yes, as you travel the line you will spot rusting vehicles, lengths of old rail and all sorts of paraphernalia through the window. Here, we see around the back of an old carriage which was, or still may be for I know, the store area for The signalling and telegraph department. And what a wonderful collection of rusting ironwork and peeling paint. I’m sure it all has a purpose sometime in the future.

I was on the railway for the annual signalman’s meeting where we look back over the previous year and are instructed on the various changes to the rule book that will apply this year. An enjoyable session really, with a group of mainly men all of a certain age. Meanwhile Susan went shopping in Tenterden.

We joined up for lunch then went on one of the KESR Walks promoted by the Railway. A six mile circular walk around Tenterden. It turned out to be six and a half in the end. Very good it was too with glimpses of the railway from new viewpoints. Walked, carefully, through a field of new born lambs which was lovely.

A grand day out.
