The Boathouse

This is Hawes Water which is part of our nearby National Nature Reserve. It is rather special as the bottom of the lake is Marl. This is a Calcium Carbonate lime rich mud. It extends round the shore of the lake and gives rise to an important flora which has resulted in its designation as an SSSI ( Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Unfortunately in recent years much of this flora, in spite of the efforts of a group of volunteers, has been in decline because of the extensive growth of bramble and coarse plants. It needs carefully controlled conservation grazing.

Natural England managed to get funds for major changes round the Lake. Felling trees, removing old boardwalks and building a new one and allowing access for grazing animals.
This has been locally very controversial. The local natural history enthusiasts have been in favour of the scheme but some of the local villagers and dog walkers who do not like change have been strongly against.

Fortunately the die is cast and the work is well under way
