Englishman in the Balkans

Buying Wine for Easter

Living where I do in Bosnia and Herzegovina, means I get to celebrate two Christmases and two Easter's.

One, is the Catholic/Anglican, the other Orthodox.

This is due to some churches using the Gregorian calendar whilst the others use the Juilan.

Whatever, I get to benefit.

This weekend is the Catholic/Anglican variant, so I host Tamara's immediate family.

Thete will be a hybrid Anglo-Balkan menu, but with the addition of Hot Cross Buns that Tam makes, as it's impossible to buy any over the counter here.

I know! I know!

Hot cross buns are for Good Friday BUT, here we have them the entire weekend.

As far as wine for lunch on Easter Sunday and Monday is concerned, well we get that from a local micro-vineyard some 6 kilometers from us.

Banja Luka isn't in a traditional wine making area (most of the excellent Bosnian wines come from the region of Herzegovina) bit there is an accomplished master vintner here.

Originally from the Šibenik region of Croatia, he came to this area as a refugee as a result of the Balkans conflicts of the 1990s.

He brought cuttings from his original family vineyard and started again.

His wines and rakija are first class.

We are great fans and like to introduce friends and guests to a sampling session whenever possible.
