Englishman in the Balkans

Baking Hot Cross Buns

Last evening was spent preparing the dough for Hot Cross Buns.

Most, no, nearly everyone in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has no clue about this Good Friday tradition that British people celebrate.

The smell that permeates throughout the house as all the ingredients are brought together is just out of this world.

Total nostalgia.

Back in the UK, my parents bought them from the baker just before Easter and I enjoyed them toasted with just butter.

Later, they would buy them, in plastic bags from stores like Tesco's.

This weekend Tamara has spent some time creating Hot Cross Buns from sctatch, and to be honest, they become more and more amazing year on year.

Friends and relatives though are, at the moment, split 50/50 on taste-ability.

Spicy, fruity buns aren't natural to the Western Balkans pallette.
