Woodhenge

We've all  heard of Stonehenge but did you know about Woodhenge?  According to the English Heritage website, 'Woodhenge is an atmospheric Neolithic site close to Stonehenge. Probably built about 2300 BC, it was originally believed to be the remains of a large burial mound, surrounded by a bank and ditch almost completely destroyed by ploughing. Aerial photography detected rings of dark spots in a crop of wheat, and today concrete markers replace the six concentric rings of timber posts which are believed to have once supported a ring-shaped building. There is evidence that it was in use around 1800 BC.  It is possible that the banks and ditches were used for defensive purposes in addition to its ceremonial function.'
Today it was a wet, muddy area and and did not show its former glory.  J and I paused here for a short time to take a look  and have a break from the journey down to Somerset.  I did my best to make it look a bit interesting but no way was I getting down on the ground - what it really needed was an aerial shot!  Once, it was an impressive wood structure but it's now a series of concrete posts marking the spots.
We all arrived safely at our holiday home  which is huge - it took us a few hours to find all the rooms!  We have unpacked all the food, chilled the wine and had a meal.  The forecast is for rain - all week..... but we will have fun!
