Old Scotney Castle

We have a few days staying in Kent.  Today we visited Scotney Castle, a National Trust property at Lamberhurst, Tunbridge Wells.

This is the old medieval castle, which was partially demolished in the 19th Century by its owner, Edward Hussey III.  He built a new house further up the hill leaving the old castle as a "romantic folly" as the NT guide describes it.  It looks lovely reflected in the moat.

The "new" house was interesting, too.  It was still occupied as a residence until around 2006, and there is a fascinating mixture of original and more modern equipment and furniture inside, all carefully preserved by the National Trust.

We feel we need to go back in a month or so when the gardens should be full of colour from the rhododendrons.
