Vindolanda

Our son arrived on Friday evening.  Yesterday, the three of us had a trip to the Roman Wall in deepest Northumberland.  We visited The Sill (the new visitor centre for lunch) and then went to Vindolanda - a Roman fort.  Archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD.

My main picture is of a reconstruction of a Roman Temple at Vindolanda.  There is really good museum there with loads of finds from excavations of the site.  I have attached a few extra photos.

The weather was fabulous!  Trust me that this is a rare occurrence in this part of the world.  It is often a very bleak and cold place beside The Wall.  It was lovely sitting in the warm sunshine outside of the cafe and catching up with all our son's news.  A great day!
