Signs of Spring 3

The snow is melting fast from exposed and south facing areas. These coltsfoots are among the first flowers I have seen and I found them on a roadside bank which a week earlier had been covered in snow.
In Swedish they are called tussilago,
the first part of their Latin name, tussilago farfara.
Like snowdrops and daphne they flower really early to avoid competition for pollinating insects.
Coltsfoot really stand out because they appear before anything else so the bright yellow flowers stand out agains the brown grey background of dead vegetation. Within another week the ground will start to turn green. Even in this picture the first shoots of fresh grass are pushing up.
