Trusty John Deere

Our two older horses started eating much less hay when it started snowing on Saturday as if to say in winter we expect Haylage so today I brought a bale in. We have a few bales from 2011 that need to be fed first. Will be interesting to see how the 2012 bales turn out - one doesn't know until they are opened and as we make very dry Haylage from "old" grass.It is a bit of a lottery but in the last 15 years or so it has always worked out.
John Deere is from 1965 and although I misuse her continuously, the old lady keeps doing her duty. Started today with little difficulty although I haven't got around to filling with winter diesel and there is no pre-glow. The haylage bales are very heavy but with a heavy load on the back one can cope without servo steering - just! Will be interesting to see how our new horse copes with Haylage - I suspect he has never had it. As he's a big eater we will put it in nets and hope he doesn't bolt down too much too quickly.
Sun has come out but one needs to be careful as avalanches of snow keeping falling from the trees. Snow & ice in sunshine allows spectacular photo opportunities even with a 3rd rate camera.Due to get back to double figures tomorrow & stay that way for some time. Winter will hopefully come back at the proper time - December 24th - and spring will arrive on January 7th! Given the weather capers of late who knows. Thoughts are with the victims of Sandy.
