Alms houses of St John's, Winchester

Down in Winchester for the day, we met up with a friend and wandered around the fantastic produce market there. Not for the faint hearted or vegetarian, this market seems to have veg but to specialise in meat - mostly of the game type although not exclusively. We bought some cheese, and local asparagus and filled the freezer really with various meats, pigeon, pheasant, partridge, venison and game pie mix.
Whilst pottering about l spotted through a gateway these lovely old alms houses dating back to the 19th century although the church they are connected to was established there in the 12th century.

We also popped in and saw an exhibition of Gerald Scarfe's work. I was amazed as l had only known him as a rather cutting political cartoonist but it seems he is a major set designer for stage and screen. An interesting exhibition.

Winchester, is of course, home to the beautiful Winchester cathedral but it was was very cold and a service was in progress so we did not go in this time.
