Tunbridge Wells Race Course

I watched the TV programme on Regency Cheltenham and learned that every self respecting Regency town had a race course. Tunbridge Wells is a Regency town and it  had a race course from at least 1738 until about 1851when it was stopped, after a petition from the residents who maintained the racing encouraged drunkeness and riotous behaviour.  Maybe the race -goers of Cheltenham were better behaved because they, of course, still have a race course.  Circumnavigated the old Tunbridge Wells race course (above) imagining I was stepping in the hoof steps of horses past and noticing evidence of horses present. I wonder if they went round clockwise or anti-clockwise - is there a convention?
