The Tannery

The day was spent mainly in the Medina in Fez, the largest in the world.

Not a promising start to the tannery area as you are handed a bunch of mint at the door to sniff to protect you from the smell. But those of our fellow travellers who have visited other tanneries say that this is a sanitised one as we observed the work from the roof top. On the left are the vats that wash and clean the skins, then the darker and coloured cats where eventually the skins are given their final look. Cow and camel are the two main animals used for the coats, bags and shoes.

Extra is of a sleeping porter taken in the metal work area.

An early start tomorrow on our way to Erfoud on the edge of the Sahara.
