tempus fugit

By ceridwen

The day has a thousand eyes

- as the poet didn't say - and  you do need keen sight to spot these tiny  eyelash fungi which are only 2 or 3  millimetres across. Each minute orange disc  is surrounded by a delicate fringe of' lashes, the purpose of which is not known. The species is saprophytic and grows on rotten wood.

To give a better idea of the scale, the extra image includes a passing wood louse.

Fancy a flutter?
