My topsy-turvy life

By Rathmandu

James Connolly

Today's sightseeing involved a walk over to Kilmainham Gaol and the Irish Museum of Modern Art -that turned out to be closed- followed by the National museum, and another pint of Guinness.
The idea of the walk part of it was to try and get my legs working again.

Kilmainham Gaol's a very sobering place to visit. Amongst others, the leaders of the 1916 Easter rising were jailed and excuted here, by firing squad, in the exercise yard. This cross marks the spot where James Connolly was executed. Connolly was so badly wounded in the fighting that he was unable to walk to the spot where the others were executed and so was strapped to a chair, blindfolded, and shot at the other end of the yard, despite only having days to live anyway. That didn't go down well.
