They Do!

The Cup final and the inaugural day of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland paled into insignificance for me today when they clashed with the wedding of Harry and Meghan.
I am an unapologetic Royalist being no admirer of Presidents or elected heads of state who come and go with political parties. And so it was that with a 5 mile walk over by 8am I felt able to slump in front of the television and watch the proceedings unfold in Windsor. The British do a good ceremonial occasion.

I was admiring of Meghan’s mother who carried herself with dignity and aplomb in what must surely have been an out of comfort zone;I listened with amazement to the American Episcopal Bishop’s address, wondering all the while if the Royals had ever heard anything like it at one of their weddings; I marvelled at Camilla’s hat which looked as though it might take off into orbit; I sympathised with Zara Phillips as she tried to get comfortable on her hard choir seat so late into her pregnancy; I thought the bride looked beautiful and she and Harry look so happy, but the icing on the cake was seeing the Household Cavalry, all spurs , plumed hats and clip clopping greys, escort the newlyweds in an open topped landau through the street of Windsor on the most beautiful summer’s day one could possibly imagine.

Since I didn’t get an invite to the wedding, my blips are, you might say, second hand, but they are valid records of the day for me. So I give you the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex or as they will be known in Scotland, the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton.
