Garden Guineas

After all the excitement of the last couple of days we had a stay at home day today. Nice to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.

On our walk this morning these guinea fowl were close to the road as we walked past. The lady that owns them always stops for a chat when she sees us..we often pass in the woods, which they own part of! A few weeks ago I spotted her guinea fowl in a field about a quarter of a mile away, and when I mentioned it she sort of rolled her eyes and said that she had given up trying to keep them in her garden / paddock. They spend all day wandering about but she says they always come home to roost in a tree overnight.

She was also telling me that she has lost a couple of her chickens recently, a red kite swooped into the garden and took one and badly injured another, which had to be destroyed as a result.

I thought that red kites were carrion feeders, but it seems that their behaviour is changing - perhaps the surge in numbers is forcing them to find other sources of food.
