Stars And Stripes

The American troopship Tuscania was torpedoed by a German submarine in February 1918, resulting in over 230 fatalities.
On loan from the Smithsonian Museum in Washington to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the event, this flag, currently on display in the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte, was made by five residents, working overnight, so that the funerals might take place under their own flag.
Simplistic in style and in fabric, it is a demonstration of compassion in wartime.
