Smiling Faces

Alex and I surveyed a disused brick-pit in south-east Cambridgeshire today - a county wildlife site with flower-rich grassland on the chalky slopes and shallow lakes with abundant stonewort and mare's-tail. It was managed as a fishing lake for many years, and two of the bunds which extended into the lake had a motley array of garden flowers, including a thriving patch of cheerful violas. After yesterdays stifling heat, there was a stiff breeze today, which kept it much cooler, but blew loose soil everywhere, leaving my car covered with fine dust.
