Back to Culbin

When you have Culbin Forest on the doorstep there really is no reason to go anywhere else.  Today I grabbed a coffee and cake from the Bakehouse Cafe and we drove over to Culbin to walk the Hill 99 Trail.  Hill 99 is the biggest sand dune in the forest and atop it there is a tower which raises you above the level of the trees and gives fabulous views across to the sea in one direction and across the expanse of the forest in the other.

Back down on the forest floor we took a smaller trail out to the shore at The Gut.  Strangely this bay is full of poles which were erected to prevent gliders from landing in the Second World War.  We had it to ourselves and enjoyed our cuppas and cake whilst taking in the wildflowers.  Thrift was in abundance.  Returning to the trail, we took another diversion to the Culbin History corner.  Strangely, there was a chimney and roof trusses of a house now covered with sand after being abandoned a couple of centuries ago.  Although a beautiful place to wander through nowadays, Culbin must have been a tough place to live.

It's our last day on the Moray Firth so we have been gradually packing.  Tomorrow it is the Scottish Championships and then we'll turn towards home.  It's been a great week at Rosebay.
