a lifetime burning

Undergoing pre-flight checks

Cathy spotted this immature adult damselfly that was letting its wings stretch out following its emergence earlier this afternoon.  As you can see from the wing tips, it is not quite ready to fly yet, so still in a vulnerable state, although its very nearly there now.

At this stage it has not got its full colour yet,  but it clearly looks as though its going to be blue. I initially thought that this was an Azure damselfly.  But when I look closely there is no black flat bottomed U shaped mark at segment 2, which the males have.  Given the combination of blue colouring and the shape of the mark at segment 2 I wonder whether this one might actually be a Southern Damselfly male - they tend to emerge in June, so if it is a Southern then it is quite early.
