Quilts from Gee's Bend

This is a stunning exhibition of quilts by Mary Lee Bendolph of Gee's Bend, Alabama.  It was at the Mt. Holyoke College Art Museum and in fact ended today. There is a family connection: my father's family (living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama) owned the Gee's Bend plantation from 1895 to 1937. Mary Lee has made quilts all her life, but has devoted full time to them since retirement in 1992.  The first significant exhibition with her quilts was at the Whitney Museum in 2002, and a series of shows has followed.
