Milwaukee Art Museum....

....designed by Santiago Calatrava.  When asked to submit a design for the building, Calatrava said "The committees' ambition was to create something exceptional for their community.....Thanks to them, this project responds to the culture of the lake: the sailboats, the weather, the sense of motion and change."
The Museum's signature "wings", the Brise Soleil, is made up of 72 steel fins that range in size from 26 to 105 feet and together weigh 90 tons. It takes 3.5 minutes for the wings to open or close. There are sensors on the fins that continually monitor wind speed and direction; whenever the wind exceeds 23 mph for more than 3 seconds, the wings close automatically. The inside is as amazing as the outside. When you enter into the museum you're in the grand entrance hall; Calatrava's interpretation of a Gothic Cathedral with flying buttresses, pointed arches, ribbed vaults and a central nave topped by a 90 foot high glass roof. The part of the hall that faces the lake is shaped like the prow of a ship with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.  It's as stunning inside as outside, and truly is an exceptional building. You can just see a little bit of the Lake beyond the museum.
Thanks to Bobsblips for his widwed challenge and theme of "lines". :))
