Englishman in the Balkans

Cherry Cake

I can't believe it's the first day of June already.

The start of summer is 21 June so just a few shirt weeks away.

With the way the weather behaviour has been recently, I still wonder if what I grew up knowing, as four distinct seasons, is still relevant.

Here in this part of the Western Balkans, we now seem to experience winter, and then across a few short weeks, a roller coaster that takes us from minus degrees to the plus mid twenties.

It certainly is confusing nature.

Just look at the buds starting to open, then close again and bugs that start to explore then race back into cover.

So I have been more than pleasantly surprised, at the quality of fruit that's now appearing on the trees and bushes in the garden.

We could be in for a bumper crop of plums, which will mean lots of Rakija (Home distilled plum Brandy) and maybe Pekmez (Jam) as well.

Apples, also for rakija and for chutney (something I have introduced to friends and family here over the years).

There'll also be some pears I think.

The grapes and raspberries will be destined for wine without a doubt.

And cherries.

What to do with the cherries?

Why, make home made cakes of course!

Delish!
