Windermere - (day 6)

We jumped on the boat that for 50p goes across the lake.... (the car ferry broke down last week, apparently it will take a month to repair and the crew have unpaid leave till its done - happy days for them).

On the other side there is a mini bus that will take you to Wray Castle , where Beatrix Potter stayed on her lake district holiday - falling for the lakes she went onto bequeath the 4000 acres she had acquired during her life time to NT. It was 2016, when NT hit the headlines, when they wanted to spit "her"  land  from the various farm houses, the locals feeling it would prevent the next generation of farmers being able to access affordable farmsteads, in favour of NT making a substantial profit.

The photo is taken at Claife viewing station, apparently the lakes were once seen as just useless over grown land, and when they were "discovered" there was concern that the views from this point, were so breathtaking it may cause people to faint.....I thought they were made of stronger stuff. The coloured glass, originally in the dinning room ( I think) of the house was so visitors  could look through the different colours and see the landscape as it would be in the different seasons. The peace and quiet of the  west shore has won me back a bit from taking the time to this stop on our tour.

The extras are the NT coffee shop at Claife station.
