Railway Heritage

Railway viaducts remind me of old movies, steam trains and Harry Potter. I pulled over in the country lane this afternoon to snap this photo. Such an amazing example of 19th century railroad architecture.

Lullingstone Viaduct was built in 1862 by the Sevenoaks Railway to take the line over the Darenth Valley. It has nine arches of 30 feet span, and is built of red brick.

For some reason it reminded me of a scene in the TV series Victoria when Prince Albert persuades The Queen to take a train for the first time in June 1842.

Prince Albert, who was very keen on the progress of science and industry, had taken his first railway journey on 14 November 1839 when he travelled from Slough to Paddington on the Great Western Railway.
