Culloden, a desolate place..

It is a cold, rainy and miserable day. Just like the day the Jacobites faced the government army led by the Duke of Cumberland. The last hand to hand pitched battle fought on these shores.

Many more highlanders were hunted down and murdered after the battle than during it. Those not butchered faced imprisonment or even sent as slaves to plantations in the Caribbean or North America.

After the battle, war was waged on the highland way of life and culture. The Gaels were particularly badly affected.

Culloden is an official war grave. Many brave men on both sides fell here. Thank goodness nowadays we can pursue change via the ballot box rather than the sword and musket.
