Ce Ne Sont Pas Des Oranges

We went up to the UCSC Arboretum to experience Forest (for a thousand years...), a 28 minute three-dimensional sound collage installation by Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. Visitors sit on tree stumps in a young redwood grove, feeling tiny under the tall straight dense trees. It's shady and cool, sunlight glitters through the branches. There are sounds, some live, some recorded: birds, wind in the trees, crackling footsteps on the forest floor. You turn, and no one is there. The sound of running feet, an airplane, laughter, gunfire, singing. A herd of horses runs by. Someone screams. There seems to be a story, but it has no words. It's unsettling, magical, scary, sweet, oddly satisfying.

As for the oranges, they were there on the fence when I went for a walk this morning.
