At the going down of the sun

Sunday 10th June 2018

100 years ago today, at the age of 26, my Gt Uncle, 60649 Gunner Geoffrey Harold Stafford was killed in action in WW1.

The War Diary shows the 263rd Siege Battalion were with the 12th Brigade of the Royal Garrison Artillery. On 10th June 1918 they were at Sylvestre Cappel, where they had been since 18th May. Along with the 70, 242 and 319 Siege Batteries they engaged targets in Merris and Vieux Berquin. That day two soldiers in the Battalion were killed - Geoff and Gunner J A McDonald 183096. It was just five months before the end of the war.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Tonight's sunset was perfect for the tribute I wanted to make to Geoff, whom my Dad was named after.
