Chilean lanterns

This is supposed to be the last sunny day, with rain coming in tomorrow. Mind you, I've heard that before!

I spotted this beautiful shrub today with a background of hills and sea. Crinodendron hookerianum, the so-called Chilean Lantern Tree, does fairly well in our west coast climate, but isn't reliably hardy inland. It's known in Chile as El chaquihue (pronounced 'chaki-way') though I don't know what that means.

A lovely shrub whatever it's called!
