Anglokastro

Today we decided to do the walk my husband had tried out a few days ago. We set off early finding the start of the Corfu Trail from the beach. It involved walking through hotel grounds past a swimming pool and out across the remains of an old terrace. Then it was climbing up rocks and a small ladder through the woodland. We managed to stay on the trail which was a mixture of roads and olive groves to Lakones a hillside village with magnificent views down to Paleokastritsa and the mainland beyond. Here we stopped for espresso and walnut cake before heading for Anglokastro. This meant walking downhill before climbing up the magnificent fortress. The views were amazing this fortress having been an important strategic viewpoint with the whole of the south Adriatic visible. There is evidence to suggest it was first fortified and occupied in the 5th to 7th century.

From here we retraced our steps back home, stopping in an abandoned house to shelter from the rain. We arrived back pretty tired and 15 minutes later there was a very impressive thunderstorm with heavy rain and lightning. The islands electricity went off briefly. In all we walked around 13miles.
