New Dutch Herring

Eating the new fresh RAW herring is a typical Dutch tradition and is traditionally eaten by lifting the herring by its tail and eat it upwards holding it over your mouth and sliding it into the open mouth, as demonstrated in the extra photo.

When the fishing boats enter the harbor of Scheveningen with the new catch it is a big feast called ‘vlaggetjesdag’ (Flagsday) and the first barrel of herring is auctioned for a charity cause. This year the highest bid was € 78.000,- and the charity was The Aid Dog Foundation who are trained to help people with a physical or mental disability.

How nice that I spotted a dog that also enjoys the herring biting tradition, I couldn’t have a better picture today
