Final tweaks

As the shadows lengthen on the eve of judgement day, last minute weeding, pruning and planting  will ensure that the town's flower beds, planters, herb garden, vegetable patch, community orchard and allotments will all be looking their best for tomorrow's visit by the Britain in Bloom judges.

The Greening Project in Fishguard and Goodwick, initiated after the county council abandoned responsibility for maintaining public green spaces, has already won several awards including a Green Flag last year, and aims to become officially Bee Friendly next year. It started as the brain child of one person (seen here in a blue top) who has organised and motivated  a squad of regular and not-so-regular volunteers, as well as winning over  local organisations, professionals and  business proprietors to support the initiative. Now, schools and youth clubs get involved, pubs and shopkeepers install hanging baskets or window boxes, community groups sponsor purpose-made planters, a retired doctor started a vegetable plot behind the health centre and the dentist who practices over the way here gets his skilful hands dirty in this very flower bed.

Whatever tomorrow brings the glory of community gardening has already brought green kudos to the town.
