Back to Ikshinskoye

Sunset over Ikshinskoye Reservoir. The reservoir forms part of the Moscow Canal System which was managed by the NKVD and built by gulag labour between 1932 and 1937.  The objective being to divert water from the Volga River to Moscow city and also provide navigable access via a series of locks to passenger and freight traffic.  About 200,000 prisoners were employed in the project though some estimates place this number as high as 700,000.
