Migrant in Moscow

Church of the Kazan Icon of Our Lady

In Dolgoprudny, a commuter town northwest of Moscow. Taken on the way out of the city this morning.  The church is relatively very new by Russian Orthodox standards having been built in 1997-2003. Their website states the height of the church as 50 meters and that there are 33 domes, one each for each year of Christ's earthly life. A church has existed on this site for about 500 years but closed in 1961 "during the period of intensified persecutions of faith" as the website states.  The structure of the original church, a wooden one, which still exists today, received official protection for its architectural status.  It was destined to be dismantled and moved to a special museum site but it seems that the decision got caught up in bureaucracy and time ran out on the soviet union.  The structure remained on site and was eventually handed back to the congregation in 1988.
