But, then again . . . . .

St Kilda Jolly Boat.

Our U3A group had its annual coach outing today, this year it was to the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow. It was Herself who noticed this dingy little dinghy tucked away in a dark corner. It is the the Steam Ship Dunara Castle's jolly boat that would have ferried passengers ashore onto Hirta (the main island of the St Kilda group) since there is nowhere for a passenger ship to berth.

The Dunara Castle was launched May 1875 at Port Glasgow and did regular trips to the Hebrides, including St Kilda and was the boat that eventually evacuated the villagers on the 29th of August, 1930, leaving the islands uninhabited for the first time in four millennia.
She was scrapped April 1948 at Port Glasgow.
