Last day of term

Last night the leavers' concert at school was outstanding - one lad played the almost 25 minute long Beethoven Emperor Concerto (No. 5 in Eb major) - it was a highly accomplished and flawless performance, and he unquestionably received a standing ovation at the end of it.

This morning it was back to school for the final day of the school year - as Gavin is a governor we had to be there early for the final chapel service, which was wonderful, the highlight being when the whole school sang Libera Me (from Faure's Requiem) It is a much loved piece, a bit of a tradition at the school, they even sing it at rugby matches! Then on to the marquee for prize giving and speeches. It was an extremely hot day, about 31C but the temperature in the marquee was much more than that. I noticed the school nurse was on duty handing out water and just being on hand in case anyone fainted. The speeches from boys and the headmaster were brilliant, and the latter was a bit emotional as he is now retiring and it was his farewell speech.

Due to the football match later in the day, the afternoon jazz concert was moved from the 3pm slot to directly after the prize giving. Poor Thomas had been in that hot marquee all morning and then still had to perform in the jazz band - but he was still smiling! (extra photo)

We had a quick picnic lunch overlooking the traditional cricket match between the leavers vs non-leavers, as can be seen here. The gazebos are set up by the parents and today they were very much needed to try and provide some shade. Then it was back into the chapel for the final symphony orchestral concert of the term - Dvorak 8th - it was amazing.

People then found themselves a spot in front of the TV's that were in various locations around the school and watched the England football match (some had already gone home to watch it there) - what a result! Now everyone is hopeful that England will make it through to the final.

It was a long and busy day, and extremely hot - but a lovely end of term. Thomas has two friends coming over for a BBQ and the summer holiday begins!
