Pyronaut

Another day at the Bristol Harbour Festival and, like yesterday, proceedings on the water began with a demonstration by Pyronaut, a floating fire fighting vessel. Built in 1934, the vessel was particularly valuable during the second world war when aerial bombing raids caused many fires around the harbour area.

The current pumps, fitted in the late 1960s, can deliver 1000 gallons (4,500l) of water per minute.  It makes an impressive display.

The vessel now belongs to, and is normally berthed by, the M Shed Museum.
