I can't exactly make out the ferry timetable but think it was as follows:
Ancona     Saturday 5 Sept 21:00
Igoumenitsa Sunday 6 Sept 21:00
Corfu Sunday 6 Sept 23:00
Patras Monday 7 Sept 07:00

i.e. 34 hours.
In 2018 there is an Ancona - Patras service taking 21.5 hours.

Aircraft carrier reflects the Yugoslav/Balkan Wars that were raging in the Adriatic area from 1990-1995. In 1992 especially the Bosnia War and Croatian War of Independence. I assume it was a US/NATO carrier.
