Twenty-two years on

Couple of shows tonight. First up the Grads new play Skirt. Felt like there were too many people on stage, especially at the start, which meant it was hard to get a handle on what was going on and what the relationships were between the different characters. It got better when there were more intense exchanges between two or three characters but still felt like it was one of those performances that was more fun to do than to watch. I think there was a devised element to it and perhaps a lack of a clear single voice was an issue in the muddled outcome. After that we crossed town, through the bustle of the festival, for a show at Teviot. The ticket for Janeane Garofalo's show sits on top of the DVD of the film from the 1990s that she starred in, The Truth About Cats And Dogs. The show was engaging and entertaining, without being life-changing and fun to see her doing her thing. She's a birthday twin of mine, but I had always thought she was one year younger. She actually referenced her birthday in the show, conforming I was right about the date but she said she was 54, which would make her 55 next month, like me. Either she has already mentally had her birthday and is getting used to being a year older already, she made a mistake in the heat of performance or she previously had knocked a year off which has now been added back in.
