East Coasting

Mangrove Creek, Ashby

We went for an very interesting drive this afternoon with friends who were going to inspect a 2nd hand Off Road camper Trailer at Ashby which is a small rural settlement about 20 minutes from the coast. We got there a bit early and so did a detour to have a look at a bush camping place we had heard about that was in the area. It is down a very narrow dirt track through huge towering gum trees (I wouldn't like to get caught in there in a bushfire). It is set up with some permanent tents and bush fireplaces right on this creek and is miles from anyone and feels like it is in a remote area of western Qld or NSW and yet is so close to the coast. Everything is supplied even an open air "camp kitchen" with dirt floors etc - quite an interesting place. There is a very basic shower setup and a eco style toilet - also some little timber fishing jetties on the creek and canoes. Something to think about for the winter months when you can light a nice big fire etc - a bit hot for summer camping methinks!
