Ham Hill quarry yard

Today we paid a visit to the nearby quarry to choose a date stone for a building.

Ham Hill was first quarried by the Romans and this has carried on in fits and starts right up until the present day. There is still 80 years left of quarrying belonging to this particular yard. In the 1800s there were 24 small quarries where only the best stone was used. Today the lesser quality stone can also be used for different purposes so there is not much waste, and the yard is situated over a quarry that has been infilled.

Sherborne Abbey is a fine example of the warm honey-coloured Hamstone.

Before the Romans, Ham Hill was the site of a large Bronze and Iron Age fort but today the hill is used as a place of recreation for the townspeople of Yeovil with fine views to the north over the Wetlands to the Blackdown, Mendip and Quantock Hills.
