Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

We dogs do so hate cats!

A miserably grey, drizzly kind of day; just the day for scanning some more old Kodachromes.

One of the real perks of my career as a zoologist was visiting some very exciting places and seeing some wonderful animals. One of our projects involved using radio collars and earth satellites to track the movements and habitat use of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in the Kruger National Park. Early one morning we watched our study dogs chase a huge and formidable male leopard up a tree. They kept him up the tree for over three hours before he picked up the courage to descend and to flee.

The extra is another leopard, taken in the Kalahari Desert where we were studying the scent marking behaviour of Brown hyaenas.

Those were the days ....... and another name for a traditional British pub, the Cat & Dogs!
