Tower Stair

One of the most modern parts of the Abbey complex, this tower stair was added in the late 16th century, when the abbey had been dissolved, and the church demolished.
The remaining accommodation was used as a house by the then commander of forces on the island,  the Earl of Moray. More specifically, the Bonny Earl of Moray, from the song of the same name. He had the stair built, tacked onto the cloister, as you can see by the way none of the stones go across the join.
It is romantic to think that passing through that doorway is following in the very footsteps of Lady Mondegreen! ;)
