Police and polling

Got home from the gym to find the road full of police cars. My friendly neighbours (the ones who always brings us plates of food for Muslim festivals) had heard someone breaking into their house (at 7 pm!). The burglars had opened the front door by pushing something up through the letter box. The grown-up sons gave chase but the burglars were picked up in a car and sped off.
There have been lots of break ins near us over the last year. The robbers are targeting Asian families who might keep large amounts of very pure gold jewellry in their houses. With this week being Diwali, the police had warned householders to be vigilant. We got visited by the police asking if we'd seen anything or got the registration plate of the car. Sadly, I wasn't in and husband and son number two had the curtains closed and the TV on.

We did all go and vote for the Police Commissioner later - mainly because we think we should use our votes. For the first time ever, I was tempted to spoil my ballot paper. Why bring politics into local policing? Apparently the turn out near us was about 12% - works out at about £10 per vote.....what a waste of money.
