Ye Olde Trip

Saturday saw Cathy and I visit our daughter Jess and her boyfriend James who have moved to Nottingham this week.  As part of our site seeing we stopped in at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem for some well earned refreshment, where this shot was taken. The Olde Trip claims to be England's oldest pub, dating back to 1189.  The pub is in part built into a sandstone cave at the base of Nottingham Castle.

Lovely as the story is, just as with that other local legend Robin Hood, it is hard to pin down any actual evidence to corroborate the story :-) The oldest part of the current building dates to the mid 1650s, so it is certainly an old pub.  If it really did date back to 1189, then that would be the year that Richard the Lionheart was crowned King of England which by a strange coincidence is round about the time that the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham was trying to capture Robin Hood and his band of merry men.

Whatever the truth of it, we enjoyed our family reunion and were happy to assume that had we been sitting in this very spot all those years ago, we might have been rubbing shoulders with English Folklore Heroes :-)
