A view from Edinburgh

“It's what religion does with this drive for acknowledgement of self-importance that really gets up my nose. 'Yeah, yeah, your individual consciousness is so important to the universe that it must be preserved at all costs' – oh, please. Do try to get a grip of something other than your self-obsession. How Californian. The idea that at all costs, no matter what, it always has to be all about you. Well, I think not."

After work to Informatics for a BCS branch meeting. It’s a lovely autumn evening and we network on the 4th floor terrace before the session. It’s a spectacular view, taking in the landscape and a slice of Scottish culture.

The session is called Bots, Burnout and Blame. An alliterative investigation into how AI and machine learning interact with wellbeing. There’s a good turnout and lively debate after the presentation. (http://edinburgh.bcs.org/events/2018/180905.htm)

Back home, I come across Nick mixing compost by torchlight. I stir fry pork, while the snake refuses rat.
