Today's the day …………………… for a walk

A lovely walk today towards Burg - an area of Mull owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Burg's distinctive landscape was formed by a series of volcanoes some 50 million years ago.  Hot molten lava flowed and cooled to form the rock layers visible in Burg's stepped edges.   McCulloch's Tree - the fossil of a tree caught in the lava all those years ago can still be seen today.

Unusual plants like the grass of Parnassus  - a very pretty white flower not looking anything like grass at all - thrive on Burg's rich volcanic soil.  Today, there were butterflies everywhere - peacocks, red admirals and the speckled wood (see extra).  And just to make our day, a golden eagle soared overhead.

There is also evidence of the many people who once lived here - Iron Age farmers, Victorian villagers and four generations of the MacGillivray family ………………...
