Lismore Lighthouse

Today's the day .....................…. to light the way

We were sad to leave the island of Mull today after such a great few days there.  We boarded the ferry at Craignure for Oban.  There's a very good ferry service with a boat leaving every hour and the trip taking less than an hour.  In fact, the Sound of Mull is a busy sea route with several different ferry crossings, yachts and fishing boats all ploughing their way to and fro.

This major light at the entrance to the Sound of Mull built at the southern tip of Lismore, on the islet of Eilean Musdile, is the Lismore Lighthouse.   It was designed by Robert Stevenson and built by James Smith of Inverness.  The Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouse Board had purchased the small island for £500 in 1830 and the lighthouse was lit in 1833. Its first keeper was a direct descendant of castaway Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for ‘Robinson Crusoe’.

Lismore was one of the few manned lighthouses in the area until automated in 1965...……………………...
